Touring in Tacoma

Having spent the beginning of the year learning how governments work and visiting with many Tacoma city departments, the Alchemists are now expanding their study of Tacoma into the private and nonprofit sectors. This week they began with a visit to the University of Washington Tacoma and learned how the university has converted 100 year old buildings into the modern downtown campus. Milt Tremblay, one of the urban planners at UWT, talked to them about  the design and construction of the campus then led the Alchemists on a walking tour.

In the afternoon the Alchemists went to MultiCare Health Systems to learn about the role of health care in the community. They did a fun activity about the amount of sugar in soft drinks then got to go to the eighth floor helipad. What an amazing view on a clear, winter day!
